We Must Declare War on Jihadism
By Dr. Jeff Sanders
Nazism was legal in the United States before World War II. There was an organization called “The German-American Bund” that was a front organization for Hitler’s Nazi Party. Led by naturalized US citizen Fritz Kuhn, the Bund held rallies with tens of thousands of people in Madison Square Garden, built training camps to educate their youth, and openly recruited in America. Until.
Until December 8, 1941. On that day Adolf Hitler declared war on the United States. So, Congress then declared war on Nazi Germany. And from that point on Nazism was no longer legal in the United States. We arrested and imprisoned Fritz Kuhn and his fellow Nazis. Nazi spies, when caught by the FBI, were quickly put on trial. Some were given lengthy sentences; others were executed. The training camps were shut down. We also stripped Fritz Kuhn of his citizenship and exiled him to Germany once the war was over. We were at war with Nazism, and we went after all their agents, soldiers, and sympathizers to utterly destroy their ability to destroy our constitutional
Today we are in a conflict with terrorists, but we are too afraid to even name who they are and go after them with a coherent, long-term, relentless strategy.
Our enemy is “jihadism”. Jihadism is the imposition of Sharia by force or by law upon the United States of America. Some jihadists wish to violently overthrow us; others want to quietly usurp our constitutional freedoms by legally imposing sharia gradually (” lawfare”). Either way, it is an enemy ideology that is 100% incompatible with our Constitutional Republic. But ever since September 11, 2001, we have waged an ” on again, off again” “police action” against terrorists who want nothing less than our total destruction.
Congress must re-assert its rightful authority and issue a declaration of war against this enemy ideology and its soldiers, recruiters, spies, and sympathizers. This is not a declaration against Islam or Muslims, since there are countless Muslims in this world who hate these jihadist terrorists with a passion. For example, the Kurds who are Muslims, are fighting ISIS. King Abdullah of Jordan and General Al-Sisi of Egypt are two strong allies of the United States. And Morocco has been our oldest ally in the fight against jihad. . . going all the way back to their support for us against the Barbary pirates in the late 1700’s. We welcome all people to join us in this fight.
How would this war look different than what we’re doing right now? First, there would be no sunset clause to this declaration. The jihadists are not going away any time soon. They know right now that all they have to do is wait through an election or two and they will get more “agreeable leaders” in our government. A declaration will not completely solve the problem, but it will commit successive administration’s to a policy of total warfare against jihadism.
This gives us the legal tool– with historical precedent– to decisively go after jihadist threats here in this country and abroad. Those who wish to live in peace under our Constitution may do so. Those who want to replace our Constitution with Sharia are at war with us.
Supporters and training camps would be shut down immediately. Any place that houses jihadist training would be shut down. Jihadists would not be allowed to recruit on college campuses. . or anywhere. Like the Nazis or World War II, we would hunt them down, arrest them, deport them, exile them, execute them if they are convicted of conspiracy to commit terror, or kill them on the battlefield.
Guantanamo-like detention facilities would not be holding “detainees” for indefinite periods of time. This is a world war, initially declared by the jihadists, not us. And we will treat it as a world war.
